How to Build Up Skin Confidence
In an era where skin-smoothing filters and subtle editing are the norm, it can be easy to have high expectations when it comes to our skin. We might even find ourselves piling on the pressure to achieve the flawless complexions that we see online or in the media - forgetting that this is, often, unattainable.
At Dr Laura Clinic, we believe that the key to perfect skin is simple: confidence.
Inner skin confidence doesn’t mean that your skin needs to be clear and toned, with invisible pores and a smooth texture. Instead, possessing skin confidence means that your skin is healthy, naturally radiant and that, above all, you love how your skin feels. After all, everybody’s skin is different and unique - from the many possible combinations of skin types and textures to fine lines, wrinkles, pimples and freckles. So, rather than criticising and comparing our skin, let’s celebrate it!
However, we know that building up your skin confidence can take some time. So if you’re not there yet, don’t worry! Instead, why not try some of these tips to give your skin confidence a boost?
Be Aware of Outside Influence
Try to be mindful of any outside influences that may make you feel less confident about your skin. These may be creators on social media who regularly edit their images, airbrushed images in magazines, or even people that you know in real life who make unintentionally hurtful comments about your skin’s appearance.
If you can, consider limiting your contact with these negative influences by unfollowing accounts, or by buying different magazines. If you can’t limit contact, however, do your best to remind yourself that your skin is healthy, real, and perfect just the way it is.
Build a Skincare Routine
Taking the time to care for your skin may help you to feel more confident in your skin, as you give its health and natural glow a boost. Set aside a few minutes each day in the morning and before bed to gently cleanse and moisturise your skin, and consider how this makes you feel. Often, looking after our skin can help us to feel proud of its appearance, and see past any perceived flaws.
Find Products that Work for You
It’s a good idea to spend some time understanding your skin type and what your skin needs to look and feel its best. If your skin has a dry texture, consider experimenting with some soothing, hydrating products. If your skin is oily or has blemishes, perhaps give a cleanser or moisturiser for oily or acne-prone skin a try!
Be Gentle
It’s important to remember that building confidence is a marathon, not a sprint. Even after following the above steps, you may not feel fully confident or proud of your skin straight away. If this is the case, be gentle with yourself. Consider repeating positive affirmations, or looking in the mirror and giving your skin one compliment a day.
We know that being confident in your skin isn’t always easy. However, we’re certain that, with time, plenty of self care, and the right products by your side, you’ll grow to love your skin!
